Getting started

This section is for the person setting up a new Hatamoto site. You do not need to be a developer: if you can copy a command into a terminal and have used a hosting panel, you can follow it. At the end you have a running site, an owner account and accounts for the people who help you.

Once the site runs, the usual next jobs are to put it behind HTTPS with Reverse proxy and TLS and Hardening, to set its public address from the Configuration reference, to set up Email at Settings > Email if you skipped it in the wizard, and to plan Backups and updates. To change the look or add features, see Themes and Plugins. To bring an existing site with its old addresses, see Move your site.

Start here

Follow these in order the first time:

  1. Before you install: check your server and gather what the install asks for.
  2. Install the binary for a server you will keep, or Install with Docker to try Hatamoto on your own computer: either way your site starts and prints a setup code.
  3. First run: create your owner account, name your site and set up email.
  4. Create users: add the people who will work on the site, and reset a password.
  5. A tour of the admin: find your way around the screens you will use.
  6. Edit and publish content: write your first page and put it online.

Guides

  • Before you install

Check that your server is ready for Hatamoto and gather the few things the install asks for.

  • Install the binary

Download Hatamoto, connect it to a Postgres database and start your site.

  • Install with Docker

Try Hatamoto on your own computer by starting it and its database together with Docker.

  • First run

Claim your new site with the setup code, create your owner account and choose its name, language, email, colour and starting content.

  • Create users

Add owner and editor accounts, and reset a forgotten password, from the server's terminal.

Reference

  • Requirements

What Hatamoto needs to run, where to download it, what it creates on first start and the settings worth knowing on day one.

  • One site, one language

Why each Hatamoto install is one site in one language, what the language setting changes, and how page addresses work without a language in them.
